Toyota Motor Corporation
President, Member of the Board of Directors
Mr. Koji Sato

I hope this letter finds you well.

As an international environmental NGO, Greenpeace East Asia has implemented an auto and transportation sector campaign since 2021, with the aim of strengthening climate change measures inside and outside of Japan. To date we have published three reports analysing and evaluating decarbonisation efforts of the world’s major automakers. We have also had several opportunities for dialogue with your company.

In response to the Paris Olympic Games, held from July to August this year, we conducted a digital campaign calling on Toyota, which was a sponsor of the Games, to strengthen its response to climate change. Three Olympians, including British sailor Laura Baldwin, collaborated with us. One of our videos was viewed over 110,000 times. Approximately 3,500 citizens around the world signed our petition.

In the petition, we asked your company to take the following three actions:

1. Align your business plans with the Paris Climate Agreement;
2. Commit to stop selling new fossil fuel vehicles, including hybrids, globally by 2030 at the latest; and
3. Stop trying to water down climate policies and targets across the world.

The severity of the climate crisis is increasing day by day. This past summer, 80 out of 153 weather stations in Japan reported the highest temperatures on record. Many citizens, scientists, and Olympians around the world, including those who signed the petition, are interested in how your company can align its business activities with the Paris Climate Agreement. Your company’s annual global emissions are roughly equivalent to half of Japan’s emissions as a nation.

For these reasons, we have decided to send you the attached questions. We would be most grateful to receive your responses by November 20. Please note that we will publish your answers to the questions on our website and share them with media outlets.

Yours sincerely,

Sam Annesley
Japan Country Director
