TAIPEI – Today TSMC announced that it would move forward by 10 years its target to achieve 100% renewable energy, to 2040.
Greenpeace East Asia Climate and Energy Project Manager Yung-Jen Chen said:
“This is a big step forward for TSMC and a positive signal for the semiconductor industry as a whole. We are facing an increasingly dire climate emergency, and electronics manufacturers are finally recognizing the need to take action.
But while 2040 is a good first step, it shouldn’t be the end goal. For us to have a fighting chance at keeping the average annual global temperature increase within 1.5C, we need electronics manufacturers to commit to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. Apple and Google have already achieved 100 percent renewable energy across their own operations, and Microsoft is not far behind. It’s time for electronics giants like TSMC to catch up.
TSMC is an industry leader in semiconductors and an incredibly influential company. We hope to see TSMC commit to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, including a target for 20 percent self-generation. It’s exciting to see an electronics manufacturing giant significantly increase its climate ambition, and we look forward to a future in which TSMC aligns its climate commitments with the 1.5C Paris Agreement goal.”
