Greenpeace Malaysia is working hard to amplify our voice for the Global Plastics Treaty. Our mission? To push the Malaysian government to take bold steps in reducing plastic production by at least 75% by 2040.
We’re not just talking about tweaks; we’re advocating for systemic change on a larger scale. It’s time to get serious about sustainability and reshape Malaysia’s plastic landscape.
Why? Because plastic is not just a waste management problem; with production based on the need for fossil fuels, it’s also a climate change problem.
Moving the Needle with Political Advocacy
On 30th October 2023, we sent a letter to key ministries, especially the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), outlining our battle plan for sustainable plastic management. The results are in, and it’s clear that our efforts are making waves.
The Ministry of Health got in touch with us to meet and discuss research efforts related to public awareness and innovation in early December. The NRECC gave no response, despite the issue being under their purview.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has acknowledged our concerns and expressed commitment to personally connect with us soon after a thorough review of the letter.
We also met with YB Tuan Anuar bin Abd Manap, the State Assemblyman (ADUN) of Johor, on 23rd November. We shared Greenpeace’s stance on the Global Plastics Treaty. YB Anuar expressed interest in future collaborations and is considering raising some of these issues during the upcoming council meeting in November, adding another layer to our advocacy.
Creative Advocacy in Action
But wait, there’s more! Our creative and collaborative effort brought forth a symbolic plastic monster, constructed entirely from plastic waste collected by staff and volunteers.
We orchestrated two impactful non-violent direct actions, at the heart of Kuala Lumpur in front of KLCC and Dataran Merdeka, to visually convey our commitment to driving change.

This monstrous creation, accompanied by its unhappy bride, stands as a powerful representation while telling the story of our collective mission to break free from the toxic relationship with plastics.
