Environmental Rights for ASEAN

Greenpeace Malaysia is mobilising people nationwide to urge the government to make environmental rights a priority as Malaysia chairs ASEAN in 2025.

Under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, we have a rare chance to set a new regional standard: a legally binding framework that protects vulnerable communities, ensures clean air, and holds corporations accountable.

Our Approach

We work on three key fronts to make environmental rights a reality in Southeast Asia:

Advocacy at the highest Level

Lobbying PM Anwar and ASEAN leaders to adopt a region-wide, legally binding environmental rights framework that safeguards clean air, safe water, ancestral lands, and protection from environmental harm.

Accountability through investigations

Exposing environmental destruction across borders, from forest fires linked to land clearing to fossil fuel expansion, and demanding justice from corporations and governments.

Community power

Amplifying the voices of Indigenous peoples like the Orang Asal and Asli, and mobilising public support. With over 10,000 signatures collected, we’re proving that people across Malaysia demand bold, decisive action.

Our Projects

We aim to drive bold campaigns and strategic actions to protect environmental rights across Malaysia and the ASEAN region.

ASEAN Peoples’ Forum

Alongside over 200 allies from across Southeast Asia, we co-hosted side events on transboundary haze and corporate responsibility at the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum.

Community advocacy & awareness

Through a symbolic hike at Taman Tugu, we brought people together in nature for reflection, connection, and collective action for the fight for environmental rights.
