Environmental Rights ASEAN

Greenpeace Malaysia is uniting communities and individuals to urge the Malaysian government to prioritise environmental justice and lead the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2025 toward a future where environmental rights are no longer ignored.

At a Glance

In 2025, Malaysia, under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, takes on the ASEAN Chairmanship. This is a critical opportunity for Malaysia to lead the region in prioritising environmental rights before it’s too late.

Greenpeace Malaysia is calling on PM Anwar and the Malaysian government to champion a legally binding ASEAN framework for environmental rights. This framework would protect vulnerable communities like the Orang Asal and Asli, ensure cleaner air, and hold corporations accountable for environmental damage.

Why It Matters

ASEAN was built on shared promises: peace, justice, and protection for all its people. But today, the region is in crisis—climate disasters, toxic air, and environmental destruction are putting millions at risk.

Climate change is no longer a future threat. It’s flooding homes, choking our air, and displacing communities including Orang Asal and Asli. We can’t afford to look away—or wait.

That’s why we need strong, legally binding policies that prioritise environmental rights—not empty promises with no follow-through. The right to clean air,  ancestral lands, a healthy and safe environment, and protection from harm are basic human rights. Yet across Southeast Asia, they remain unprotected. It’s time for real action.

Our Approach & Impact

Greenpeace Malaysia is pushing for real action at the highest level of governance. We expose regional environmental harm, from forest fires linked to land clearing to fossil fuel projects through cross-border investigations that hold corporations and governments accountable.

We amplify the voices of local and Indigenous communities defending their right to clean air, safe water, and ancestral lands, pushing for these rights to be recognised at ASEAN level.

And we mobilise public support. With 10,000+ signatures and counting, we’re showing PM Anwar and ASEAN leaders that people are ready for bold action. Our lobbying and media work throughout 2025 will make environmental rights impossible to ignore.
