Jakarta, 15 November 2022 – Kiki Taufik, Global Head of Greenpeace Indonesia’s Forest Campaign, responded to announcement of an alliance between rainforest nations Indonesia, Brazil and Democratic Republic of Congo:
“An alliance between the countries with the largest forest areas in the world should be welcomed as a way to work together for the protection of ecosystems that are crucial for the fight against the climate crisis. However, any deal based on carbon markets to allow polluting countries to use the rainforests of these regions to offset their emissions will undermine the only real solution: reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Global North must provide financing for the protection and restoration of tropical forests through credible funding mechanisms that are transparent, not through blank checks that allow them to keep wreaking havoc on the planet.
A true and fair deal to protect our forests must be centered in a commitment to zero deforestation and the restoration of deforested and degraded areas. It must entail the end of impunity for environmental criminals and be led by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities from these regions, who have been fighting for the protection of their rights, lands and livelihoods for hundreds of years, and that are historically most affected by the climate emergency.”
