“It is with indignation that Greenpeace Africa learned last April that the DRC Minister of hydrocarbons, Aimé Ngoy Mukena, is working on a project that will open up a large block of two UNESCO World Heritage sites – Virunga and Salonga National Parks for oil exploration. We denounce the fact that the Minister of environment, Amy Ambatobe has made no objection to this controversial project. Greenpeace Africa strongly condemns any initiative that would attempt to jeopardize these areas that are very rich in biodiversity and that render enormous environmental services to humanity, in favour of oil exploration that will only benefit the selfish interests of a small group of people.” said Irene Wabiwa Betoko, Senior Forest Campaigner for the Congo Basin”.
