OTTAWA – Today at 9:08, two activists from Greenpeace Canada were arrested at Stornoway, Ottawa’s official residence of the Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Poilievre. The protesters, arrested for mischief and intimidation, did not resist the police. The activists were part of a larger group who installed a replica oil pumpjack in Stornoway’s driveway, surrounded by burned forest and flames and painted with charcoal made from wood burned in the 2021 wildfire that destroyed the town of Lytton, British Columbia to symbolize the costs of climate inaction. The activists carried a powerful message: Poilievre: Protecting polluters, betraying people.

“Poilievre’s silence today is proof that his true agenda is to protect polluters while betraying people. We gave him a chance to explain how he will protect people in Canada from unnatural climate disasters, but apparently he didn’t consider communities’ health and safety important enough. While I am being arrested, Poilievre is planning to give free passes to big polluters like oil and gas, securing more profits for the richest at the expense of Canadians’ futures. People in Canada deserve leaders who protect people and our climate, not polluters” said Keith Stewart, one of the activists arrested and Senior Energy Strategist at Greenpeace Canada.
