Part 2: How can Southeast Asia rise to the critical moment in the plastic crisis
The battle for a strong Global Plastics Treaty continues, and Greenpeace remains unwavering in our commitment to secure binding, ambitious measures that address plastic pollution at its source. The unprecedented support from over 100 countries for a reduction in plastic production targets demonstrates that our advocacy is resonating at the highest levels of global policy-making.
Southeast Asia’s critical stake
The implications for Southeast Asia are particularly significant. The region stands to face severe consequences if upstream measures are excluded from the treaty. ASEAN countries must take bold actions to support global targets for sustainable plastic production, phase out single-use plastics, push for hybrid finance models and champion the reuse and refill system.
As Malaysia prepares to host the ASEAN Summit in 2025, we will be monitoring the developments that translate into meaningful action. Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has pledged to prioritise plastic pollution during Malaysia’s chairmanship, making it a focal point of regional environmental discussions.

Regional action and local leadership
The fight shall continue as Greenpeace Malaysia, working alongside local environmental groups and community organisations, will be pushing for stronger domestic policies that address plastic pollution at its source. We seek to advocate for comprehensive upstream measures, including mandatory reductions in single-use plastic production and the implementation of ambitious reuse targets.
This local movement is crucial, as Malaysia’s stance on plastic pollution needs to align with its potential role as a regional leader in environmental protection rather than following the positions of oil-producing nations that may undermine the treaty’s effectiveness.
Join millions of voices worldwide demanding a strong Global Plastics Treaty that cuts production at source – sign the petition now and be part of the movement to ensure our leaders deliver an ambitious, binding agreement our planet desperately needs, not another empty promise.

With plastic pollution present in almost every corner of the planet, now more than ever do we need to support a strong Global Plastics Treaty. Discover how Greenpeace work to protect our only home from the plastic crisis.
