From October 6 to 12, Ukraine will host its first Ukrainian Climate Week — a large-scale marathon of events and activities dedicated to climate change. The initiative will become an annual event and will now take place every second week of October.

More than 60 initiatives from different regions of the country have already joined. Anyone who shares climate values can join by registering their activity in a special form

Ukrainian Climate Week was initiated by pro-climate civil society organizations: Greenpeace Ukraine, Ecodia, Rozviy, Ukrainian Climate Network, Ukrainian Environmental Group, StarDub, Fridays For Future Ukraine, U-Cycle, and Holosiivskyi National Nature Park.

The organizers emphasize that the effects of climate change are already being felt in Ukraine. We are seeing abnormal temperatures, destructive floods, and droughts that pose a threat to agriculture and human health. The war only exacerbates the crisis: daily fires, destruction of infrastructure, leaks of hazardous substances, and emissions from combat operations are damaging the environment.

“Climate Week activities are designed to unite Ukrainians around the issue of climate change and the search for solutions to mitigate the climate crisis,” says Yevheniia Kravchenko, engagement coordinator at Greenpeace Ukraine and co-organizer of Ukrainian Climate Week. “The climate movement is not only a sign of democracy, but also Ukraine’s voice in the global movement — on the consequences of the Russian invasion, sanctions against Russia, and green recovery. Climate action makes our energy sector more sustainable, preserves nature and biodiversity, and helps build a safe tomorrow today. That is why it is important that Ukrainian Climate Week brings together hundreds of people and dozens of organizations across the country and shows the world that we, Ukrainians, are not only fighting for freedom, but also creating a future in extremely difficult conditions.”

Climate Week is open to everyone. Citizens, organizations, educational institutions, and communities can participate. All you need to do is share the values of Ukrainian Climate Week and register your activity using a special form. The format can be anything from an author’s column in the media to an educational event, a community cleanup, environmental games, or scientific presentations.
