The Tasman Sea, between Aotearoa and Australia, is brimming with life. Ancient corals, sharks, turtles, fish, seabirds and migratory whales all live or pass through this special area on the high seas of the South Pacific.
Within the Tasman Sea is Lord Howe Rise, a plateau that includes a chain of seamounts rising from the deep. These underwater mountains create vibrant habitats that sustain coral forests and unique species, making this area biologically significant on a global scale. But this life in the Tasman Sea is at risk from industrial fishing, including destructive bottom trawling that bulldozes the seafloor and destroys ancient coral and the vibrant communities it supports.
Greenpeace is campaigning to stop bottom trawling from where it does the most harm, and to protect the Tasman Sea in one of the world’s first global ocean sanctuaries.
