With a face like a whale and a body like a shark, these seemingly frightening creatures are actually whaley gentle giants! They have about 3,000 tiny teeth, but their teeth are too small and weak to bite or chew. Instead, they scoop up plankton, krill, and small fish by filter-feeding with their massive mouths open wide.
They are the largest shark and fish in the world, and every single whale shark has a completely unique pattern of spots and stripes, a fin-gerprint of sorts. Marine scientists actually use photos of these spot-on patterns to track and ID individuals.
