Open letter to Victorian Hydrogen: We will resist any attempt to build a coal-powered fertiliser factory in Aotearoa.

We are in a nitrate emergency and a climate crisis.

The dairy industry’s excessive use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser is already choking New Zealand’s rivers and lakes, and poisoning rural drinking water. Now, an Australian company has plans to double down on the damage.

Victorian Hydrogen (Pan-Pacific Fertilisers) is planning to build a new fertiliser factory in Southland, New Zealand. The kicker is that it will be powered by a new lignite coal mine.

The plan is to use the dirtiest fossil fuel on the planet to fuel aggressive dairy herd expansion, pumping more nitrate into the water and greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.

That’s why we’re drawing a line in the sand to defend the climate, water, and our future, and stop this project before it starts. Will you join us?
