Ottawa – Today the Bloc Québecois published its position on the Canada-Mercosur free trade deal, joining the NDP and the Green Party in opposing the trade deal in its current form. All three federal opposition parties have expressed concerns about the deal’s potential impact on the Amazon rainforest.

In response, Reykia Fick, Nature and Food campaigner said:

“Three major opposition parties now oppose the Canada-Mercosur free trade deal in its current form. This deal would boost trade in precisely the goods that are driving the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. It would reward and legitimize Brazil President Bolsonaro’s ongoing attacks on the environment and Indigenous rights. New Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau must demonstrate the leadership that has been sorely lacking. It is time for him to halt Canada-Mercosur free trade negotiations and speak out against Bolsonaro’s campaign against the environment and human rights.”
