While it has gotten relatively little attention in an election (understandably) dominated by the threats posed by the Trump administration, two out of three Canadians agree that the next Canadian government should make climate action and protecting nature a high priority.

The table below attempts to summarize the commitments made by the political parties. As they don’t always answer direct questions with clear responses, it is based on a combination of the parties’ published platforms, responses to survey questions and assessments of independent experts (links below), as well as comments made by party leaders during the debates.

A question mark indicates that the party’s position is unclear. The previous Liberal government promised both an emissions cap for the oil and gas sector and a Nature Accountability law, but these did not appear in the party’s platform. I was unable to identify a clear position on the proposed Nature Accountability law from the Bloc or Greens, although the Green’s overall platform implied that they would support such a measure.

If anyone from one of the parties wants to clarify their position, let us know!
