Have you been thinking about taking action for the climate? Do you want to participate in protecting biodiversity? Earth Day is the perfect time to join us in building a brighter, greener, and more equitable world. We warmly invite you to become part of our extraordinary community of Greenpeace volunteers across Canada!
Mark your calendars for our upcoming virtual orientation on Tuesday, May 9th! This session is exclusively for our supporters and allies, and you’ll have the opportunity to connect with us, explore the opportunities we have in store for you to get involved, and learn about the unique culture of Greenpeace and our collective efforts toward positive change.
Still unsure? Well, maybe one of our incredible volunteers can persuade you. Allow me to introduce you to Trevor Cluthé, a remarkable individual who has been volunteering with us for 3 years. His leadership, unwavering passion, and infectious enthusiasm are contagious! Trevor gets involved whenever and wherever he can. When we are in a bind or need extra help, he’s our person and we are so grateful for his invaluable contributions!
I asked him a few questions about what it’s like to volunteer for Greenpeace and what we would say to new folks looking to get more involved in our movement. This is what he had to say:
“I hope that humanity can put aside its greed and work together to protect this wonderful planet we call home.“
What inspired you to initially take action with Greenpeace?
A few years ago, I went through a rough patch with my mental health. I worked with a psychologist to determine my values and how I wanted to spend my time and effort. Care for the environment was one of my strongest values so I reached out to a number of organizations and Greenpeace got back to me right away. They invited me to attend a new volunteer orientation, where I met Greenpeace volunteers and staff in Toronto. They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. So, I decided to give them my time and effort. I have really enjoyed my time with Greenpeace and look forward to taking more action with them in the future!
Tell us about the most exciting moment you had volunteering alongside the Greenpeace team.
After the orientation, I was invited to participate in numerous activities and actions. My favorite moment with Greenpeace so far has been helping with the Tripod Action outside an RBC building in Toronto [1], for the Fossil Banks campaign. We blocked one of the entrances of the building by setting up two 15ft metal tripods with a climber hanging from each of them. We attached banners that called for Canada’s big banks to divest from fossil fuels. During the morning workday rush, we held the space for a couple of hours and talked to passers-by about the campaign. So awesome.
Why would you recommend more people join Greenpeace and become volunteers?
First and foremost, I recommend joining Greenpeace because they are an independent organization that doesn’t take any money from governments or corporations. They are funded by individual supporters which allows them to speak out against any wrongdoing. Second, the climate crisis is the problem of our generation and is connected to so many other large issues. We need as many people helping out as possible to bring about the systemic changes that are necessary to save our planet. Lastly, Greenpeace treats its staff and volunteers very well. They strive to make the organization as inclusive and equitable as possible.
What is your vision for the future of the planet?
I hope that humanity can put aside its greed and work together to protect this wonderful planet we call home. I believe that ordinary people are capable of making great, necessary changes to this world if we organize and fight for what is right.
So there you have it! If you’re still not convinced, why not take a chance and give it a try? Come join us, listen, and learn. Your support is crucial, and the planet needs you now more than ever. Let’s join forces and make a difference together! We look forward to seeing you there!
