Brussels – As EU leaders prepare to meet in Brussels to seek alignment following a rollercoaster of threats and last-minute de-escalation by US president Donald Trump over Greenland, Greenpeace warned that European strength depends on strong rules to protect our health, environment and rights.

Greenpeace EU programme director Magda Stoczkiewicz said:

“As EU leaders descend on Brussels to project a united front in response to Trump’s threats, a flotilla of tankers swarms around the continent to offload gas from the US, demonstrating how dependent Europe is right now on US fossil fuels. It’s time for our political leaders to open their eyes and recognise that investments in renewables, energy poverty solutions and green jobs deliver strength, not deregulation to comply with the latest crop of dictators. Doubling down on an economic system that gives corporate bullies and their political enablers free rein at the expense of nature and the vast majority of people will only make Europe weaker and sow the seeds of future conflict. The EU should start by not only freezing, but scrapping the EU-US trade deal and the agreement to import $750 billion in US energy, mainly fossil gas.”

Lisa Göldner, fossil fuel campaigner at Greenpeace Germany, added:

“Political independence goes hand in hand with energy independence. The more Europe depends on the United States for its energy security, the greater the vulnerability to political pressure by Trump. This dependence is a dangerous trap. Every euro spent on US LNG strengthens Trump’s authoritarian agenda at home and imperialist ambitions abroad. The only way for Europe to protect its political independence and achieve true energy security is to phase out fossil gas and accelerate the shift to a fully renewable energy system.”
