Brussels – Reacting to the decision by EU governments to introduce partial sanctions against the purchase and transport of Russian oil in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Greenpeace EU climate and energy campaigner Silvia Pastorelli said:

“A partial ban on Russian oil is not a ban and it’s unacceptable that money from EU countries is even partially funding this brutal war. This is no time for half measures – if the EU can’t announce an end to all imports of Russian oil, leaders must find other ways to stem the flow of cash to Putin by immediately cutting demand in the oil-guzzling transport sector.”

Short-term measures in the transport sector alone could cut the EU’s oil consumption by 40 million tonnes and allow Europe to slash 28% of the oil that currently comes from Russia, worth €19.7 billion, within a matter of months, according to analysis by Greenpeace.
