Brussels – The European Commission’s electrification plan, announced today, must go hand-in-hand with a commitment to transition to 100% renewable energy, and cut energy waste, Greenpeace has said.
Greenpeace EU spokesperson Paul Musiol said: “An electrification target that doesn’t account for how the electricity is produced, and how energy of all sorts is horribly wasted, won’t bring down bills, cut pollution or make Europe more resilient to geopolitical shocks. Getting homes, transport and businesses off oil and gas is essential, but the electricity we replace that fuel with has to be on the way to 100% renewable. And a holistic approach must also tackle the overconsumption and energy waste of uninsulated houses, oversized cars, excessive plastic production, and energy vampire data centres.”
