Brussels, 7 April 2026 – On World Health Day, Greenpeace EU is releasing a media brief bringing together the latest scientific knowledge on the health impacts of nitrates, alongside existing data on nitrate pollution across Europe.
In 2025 an expert group convened by the Danish Ministry of Environment found that current nitrate limits in drinking water are not sufficiently protective and recommended a significant reduction, based on emerging scientific evidence linking nitrate exposure to increased risks of colorectal cancer.
The brief also highlights trends in the livestock sector, one of the main sources of nitrate pollution in water.
