Greenpeace believes you have a fundamental right to privacy on the web, and we work to protect your privacy online.
This policy applies to the use of all the pages hosted by Greenpeace New Zealand on greenpeace.org/new-zealand/
It also applies to personal information collected by us through other means, including through petitions or by face to face or telephone fundraisers.
It explains how Greenpeace New Zealand collects “personal information”, how that information is stored, and what rights you have in relation to that information.
This policy does not apply to pages hosted by other organisations or to other Greenpeace national or regional offices, or Greenpeace International, to which we may link and whose privacy policies may differ.
In this policy:
- “Greenpeace NZ” or “Greenpeace New Zealand” refers to Greenpeace of New Zealand Inc; and
- “Greenpeace” is a reference to the wider international network of Greenpeace organisations, which includes Greenpeace NZ, Greenpeace International and all other regional and national Greenpeace offices.
Greenpeace NZ may update this policy from time to time. We encourage you to revisit this page periodically for the latest Greenpeace NZ policy.
The policy was last updated on 15 may 2018
“Personal information” is information about an identifiable individual. Personal information that Greenpeace NZ may collect about you includes your name, address, contact details (such as telephone number and email address) and, if you are a donor, your payment details.
Collection of personal information
Personal information is generally collected directly from you. However, sometimes we may use publically available information to update your details. To do this, we sometimes use third party service providers who compare the information held by Greenpeace NZ against those available on public registers such as NZ POST’s ‘Change of Address’ service.
Other than the updating of information referred to above, Greenpeace NZ does not collect personal information from you unless you voluntarily choose to give it to us via this website, email, a phone call, petitions, by signing up as a supporter, or by postal mail etc.
Greenpeace NZ’s use of personal information
We use personal information provided to us for the purposes for which it is provided, and for related purposes relevant to Greenpeace NZ’s activities. These purposes include:
- Processing donations and memberships and issuing receipts.
- Communicating with you to keep you informed of Greenpeace’s activities, and to answer questions that you may have about Greenpeace NZ.
- Requesting your support (either financial or otherwise).
- Improving our website.
- Conducting supporter research (so that we can better understand our supporters and what motivates them).
If you provide information as part of an online petition or message to a government, corporation, organisation, or individual, that information may be transmitted to the recipient and you may receive an email response directly from the recipient.
We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity.
To better reach people interested in Greenpeace on social media platforms, we may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers. This is described further below.
If you sign up to one of our mailing lists, we will email you updates about the actions you take on this website, and about other Greenpeace appeals and information. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from our email list, you can do so by clicking the “unsubscribe” link which appears at the bottom of all emails we send via our lists, or by using this online form.
We maintain some records of individuals who contact us for further information or for help in case we need to contact them later or provide further information to them in the future. However, we do not provide this information to anyone else (other than for storage purposes as discussed below) unless you give us your permission, and we do not use this information for other purposes.
Social network, targeted advertising and web-analytics
We show social networking sharing buttons and widgets from social media services such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter on our website to enable you to easily share Greenpeace campaigns and news with friends. These social networking sharing buttons and widgets come from web servers which may track your behaviour on our website and may combine this with other information about you originating from other websites. You can install a browser add-on like “Disconnect” for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to disable them.
Greenpeace NZ uses Facebook and other social media services to keep supporters and others who are interested in the organisation and its activities up to date.
We may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers for the purposes of helping achieve our campaigning and fundraising aims, by delivering personalised content to existing supporters and identifying similar audiences. You may opt out of such data sharing at any time by contacting us using the details at the bottom of this policy.
We also use Facebook and Google remarketing codes to log when users of those services view our web pages. This allows us to provide targeted advertising. Greenpeace NZ does not disclose your personal information to access these services. The services are instead based on information collected by Facebook and Google. However, if you do not wish to receive this type of advertising from us in the future you can opt out using the Website Custom Audiences opt-out page for Facebook and Ad Settings for Google.
We also gather information automatically about visits to our website to help us maintain and improve its design, and to evaluate traffic statistics, such as the times of day and days of week at which we see peak traffic, and to assess the relative popularity of different areas of the site. We use Google Analytics to gather this data and analyze it. Google Analytics collects information about the date and time in which our web site was accessed, and may also track a visitor’s movement within the site, but does not collect personal information about the visitor. You can install the “Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on” to prevent information about your visits to our website being sent to Google Analytics. Our web statistics software (Google Analytics) collects information about the date and time in which our web site was accessed, and we may also track a user’s movement within the site. We use this data to improve our website performance.
