27 November 2024, Busan, South Korea — An analysis conducted by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) revealed that 220 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists, the highest at any negotiation so far, have gained access to the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) to develop a Global Plastics Treaty. Reacting to this, Marian Ledesma, Greenpeace International INC-5 delegate and Greenpeace Philippines zero waste campaigner, said:

“The analysis reveals a desperate industry willing to sacrifice our planet and poison communities, especially vulnerable communities in the Global South, to protect its profits. Fossil fuel and petrochemical lobbyists, aided by a handful of member states, must not dictate the outcome of these critical negotiations. The moral, economic, and scientific imperatives are clear: member states must deliver a strong Global Plastics Treaty that prioritizes human health, social justice, and a livable future over corporate greed. Communities in the Global South, who bear the brunt of plastic pollution and climate impacts, are demanding an agreement that decisively cuts plastic production, ends single-use plastics, and advances a just transition to real, sustainable solutions.”
