Tokyo, Japan  – In response to the announcement that Sony will source all its energy from renewables by 2040, Gary Cook, Senior IT Sector Analyst, Greenpeace USA said:

“Greenpeace welcomes Sony’s commitment to power its operations with 100% renewable energy, which is an important first step to becoming a leader on climate change. But a 2040 target is far too slow and does not represent the urgency with which we need to act. Apple has currently achieved 100% renewable energy in their own operations, and Facebook recently announced it was committing to reach its 100% renewable target by 2020.

“The lack of access to renewable electricity in Japan is holding Sony and other Japanese companies back, and run the risk of falling far behind global brands as they rapidly transition their operations to renewable energy.  Sony needs to follow the example set by Apple, Facebook, Google and other global IT brands by aggressively pursuing its goal to be 100% renewably powered with a mix of investment, procurement, advocacy, and collaboration.”

Greenpeace has been campaigning IT and electronics companies show leadership and commit to 100% renewable energy, following other major IT brands like Apple which committed to renewables in 2012.
