Many will be familiar with the distinctive call of the kiwi, but less will have had the chance to observe the illusive nocturnal bird snuffling around out in the bush.

The North Island Brown Kiwi, as photographed here by Shaun Lee, is the only species of kiwi living in the wild in the North Island. They’re the most abundant of the five kiwi species, and are often the ones you’ll see in zoos and sanctuaries.
