Greenpeace believes you have a fundamental right to privacy on the web, and we work to protect your privacy online and to be transparent about how data is captured. Your data belongs to you. We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity.

What does this privacy policy cover?

This policy applies to the use of all the pages hosted by Greenpeace Aotearoa (previously Greenpeace New Zealand) on greenpeace.org and greenpeace.org.nz

It also applies to personal information collected by us through other means, including through petitions or by face to face or telephone fundraisers and when you make a donation.

It explains how Greenpeace Aotearoa collects “personal information”, how that information is stored, and what rights you have in relation to that information.

This policy does not apply to pages hosted by other organisations or to other Greenpeace national or regional offices, or Greenpeace International, to which we may link and whose privacy policies may differ.

In this policy:

Updates to this privacy policy

Greenpeace NZ will review this policy on an ongoing basis and may update it from time to time. We encourage you to revisit this page periodically for the latest Greenpeace Aotearoa policy. If we make material changes we will notify you by email or by putting a notice on our website.

The policy was last updated on 17 June 2019

“Personal information”

“Personal information” is information about an identifiable individual.   Personal information that Greenpeace Aotearoa may collect about you includes your name, address, contact details (such as telephone number and email address) and, if you are a donor, your payment details.

Collection of personal information

Personal information is generally collected directly from you. However, sometimes we may use publicly or commercially available information to update your details.  To do this, we sometimes use third party service providers who compare the information held by Greenpeace Aotearoa against those available on public registers such as NZ POST’s ‘Change of Address’ service.

Other than the updating of information referred to above, Greenpeace Aotearoa does not collect personal information from you unless you voluntarily choose to give it to us via this website, email, a phone call, petitions, by signing up as a supporter, or by postal mail etc.

By providing Greenpeace Aotearoa with your personal information, you accept this privacy policy and authorise Greenpeace Aotearoa to collect, store and process your information in the ways outlined in this policy.

Greenpeace Aotearoa’s use of personal information

We use personal information provided to us for the purposes for which it is provided, and for related purposes relevant to Greenpeace Aotearoa’s activities. These purposes include:

If you provide information as part of an online petition or message to a government, corporation, organisation, or individual, that information may be transmitted to the recipient and you may receive an email response directly from the recipient.

We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity.
Greenpeace also never shares or swaps your data with another organisation unless we have made it obvious up front (e.g. for the purpose of handing in a petition to the government). In order to keep our administrative costs low so more of our supporters’ money goes towards our campaigns, we do utilise some trusted third party agencies for various tasks, such as to process donation payments or fundraise on our behalf. In all these cases the third parties only have access to the data they need to handle the process they are employed for and do not have permission to use it for any other purposes.

To better reach people interested in Greenpeace on social media platforms, we may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers. This is described further below.

If you sign up to one of our mailing lists, we will email you updates about the actions you take on this website, and about other Greenpeace appeals and information. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from our email list, you can do so by clicking the “unsubscribe” link which appears at the bottom of all emails we send via our lists, or by using this online form. We may also communicate through mail or via phone if we believe you would be interested in our campaign, unless you have expressed a preference not to receive such content. We will always offer you an opportunity to opt-out of receiving communications from Greenpeace. Should you choose to opt-out, we will take steps to ensure your details are excluded from future communications using this contact method.

We maintain some records of individuals who contact us for further information or for help in case we need to contact them later or provide further information to them in the future. However, we do not provide this information to anyone else (other than for storage purposes as discussed below) unless you give us your permission, and we do not use this information for other purposes.

Social network, targeted advertising and web-analytics

We offer social networking sharing buttons and widgets from social media services such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter on our website to enable you to easily share Greenpeace campaigns and news with friends. Sharing updates and appeals are a crucial method of getting campaign messages out to a large audience quickly and cost efficiently. These social networking sharing buttons and widgets come from web servers which may track your behaviour on our website and may combine this with other information about you originating from other websites. You can install a browser add-on like “Disconnect” for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to disable them.

Greenpeace Aotearoa uses Facebook and other social media services to keep supporters and others who are interested in the organisation and its activities up to date. You can manage the privacy settings on your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts to change your ad settings.

We may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers for the purposes of helping achieve our campaigning and fundraising aims, by delivering personalised content to existing supporters (or excluding those who have asked not to be included) and identifying similar audiences. You may opt out of such data sharing at any time by contacting us using the details at the bottom of this policy.

We also use Facebook and Google remarketing codes to log when users of those services view our web pages. This allows us to provide personalised contact, including advertising to visitors, which reduces the costs of our campaigns. Greenpeace Aotearoa does not disclose your personal information to access these services. The services are instead based on information collected by Facebook and Google. However, if you do not wish to receive this type of advertising from us in the future you can opt out using the Website Custom Audiences opt-out page for Facebook and Ad Settings for Google.

We also gather information automatically about visits to our website to help us maintain and improve its design, and to evaluate traffic statistics, such as the times of day and days of week at which we see peak traffic, and to assess the relative popularity of different areas of the site. We use Google Analytics to gather this data and analyze it. Google Analytics collects information about the date and time in which our web site was accessed, and may also track a visitor’s movement within the site, but does not collect personal information about the visitor. You can install the “Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on” to prevent information about your visits to our website being sent to Google Analytics. We use this data to improve our website performance to make sure we are giving supporters the information they seek when visiting the site.

How we store personal information

Some of the servers on which Greenpeace Aotearoa’s information is stored are located overseas, in Australia, Europe and Canada. By providing us with personal information, you consent to Greenpeace Aotearoa transferring information across national borders for processing and storage purposes in accordance with this policy. All such transfers are conducted in compliance with applicable laws. Your rights to access and correct your personal information are not affected by it being stored on servers located in other countries.
