The purpose of this policy is to help you understand what personal information Greenpeace collects, how we use it and what your rights are.
Greenpeace Aotearoa is committed to keeping your personal information secure and being transparent about how we collect and use your data so you can have confidence when learning about our campaigns and supporting us. We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity, and we will only use your information in accordance with all applicable laws.
What does this privacy policy cover?
This policy applies to the use of all the pages hosted by Greenpeace Aotearoa (previously Greenpeace New Zealand) on greenpeace.org and greenpeace.org.nz and their associated campaign related domains. It also applies to personal information collected by Greenpeace Aotearoa through other means, including through petitions or by face-to-face or telephone fundraisers and when you donate.
The policy explains how Greenpeace Aotearoa collects personal information, how that information is stored and used, and what rights you have in relation to that information.
This policy does not apply to pages hosted by other organisations or other Greenpeace national or regional offices or Greenpeace International, which we may link and whose privacy policies may differ.
In this policy:
- “Greenpeace Aotearoa”, “we” or “us” refers to Greenpeace of Aotearoa Inc; and
- “Greenpeace” is a reference to the wider international network of Greenpeace organisations, which includes Greenpeace Aotearoa, Greenpeace International and all other regional and national Greenpeace offices.
Updates to this privacy policy
Greenpeace Aotearoa will review this policy on an ongoing basis and may update it from time to time. We encourage you to revisit this page periodically for the latest Greenpeace Aotearoa policy. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by putting a notice on our website.
The policy was last updated on 22 August 2024.
Collection of Personal Information
Greenpeace Aotearoa obtains personal information from you when you support a campaign, engage with our social media and digital advertising, or make a donation.
Personal information is information about an identifiable individual. Personal information that Greenpeace Aotearoa may collect about you includes your name, address, telephone number and email address and, if you are a donor, your payment details.
Personal information is generally collected directly from you. However, sometimes, we may use publicly or commercially available information to update your details. To do this, we use third-party service providers who compare the information held by Greenpeace Aotearoa against those available on public registers, such as NZ Post’s ‘Change of Address’ service.
We may occasionally supplement your data with other publicly and commercially available information. This may include census information or estimations of your wealth or potential interest in donating to ensure our communications are relevant. Sometimes, we may request other personal information from you, such as gender, birthdate, identity or ethnicity. Disclosure of this information is always voluntary.
Greenpeace Aotearoa does not collect personal information from you unless you voluntarily give it or where the information is publicly or commercially available, as mentioned above.
By providing Greenpeace Aotearoa with your personal information, you accept this privacy policy and authorise Greenpeace Aotearoa to collect, store and process your information in the ways outlined in this policy.

If you provide information as part of an online petition or message to a government, corporation, organisation, or individual, that information may be transmitted to the recipient, and you may receive an email response directly from the recipient.
We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity. Greenpeace Aotearoa also never shares or swaps your data with another organisation unless we have made it obvious up front (e.g. to hand in a petition to the government, we would provide your first and last names along with your town or city if you have provided that). To keep our administrative costs low so more of our supporters’ money goes towards our campaigns, we utilise some trusted third-party agencies for various tasks, such as processing donation payments or fundraising on our behalf. In all these cases, the third parties only have access to the data they need to handle the process they are employed for and do not have permission to use it for other purposes.
To better reach people interested in Greenpeace Aotearoa on social media platforms, we may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers. This is described further below.
If you provide us with your email address, we will email you updates about the actions you take on our websites and other Greenpeace Aotearoa appeals and information. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from our email list, you can do so by clicking the unsubscribe link, which appears at the bottom of all emails we send. We may also communicate through mail, SMS or via phone if we believe you would be interested in our campaigns and to fundraise unless you have expressed a preference not to receive such communication. We will always offer you an opportunity to opt out of receiving communications from Greenpeace Aotearoa. Should you choose to opt out, we will take steps to ensure your details are excluded from future communications using that contact method.
You can contact our Supporter Relations team at any time by emailing [email protected] or calling 0800 22 33 44 if you would like to update any of your communication preferences.
We maintain some records of individuals who contact us for further information or for help in case we need to contact them later or provide further information to them in the future. However, we do not provide this information to anyone else (other than for storage purposes, as discussed below) unless you give us your permission, and we do not use this information for other purposes.
