Put “Big Seafood” on notice – clean up the global fishing industry

Reports of illegal fishing as well as human rights violations in the global fishing industry have been mounting for decades, across the globe and throughout the supply chain. Yet little has shifted in the industry to protect oceans or workers.
That’s why the Greenpeace Beyond Seafood* campaign is calling on “Big Seafood” to end isolation at sea – a practice that keeps ships at sea for months or years at a time, away from the watchful eye of inspectors and law enforcement. “Big Seafood” is a way to name the many corporations that are raking in the profits whilst depleting our oceans and profiting from the severe labour issues in their supply chain. Reaching from grocery stores, such as Walmart and Carrefour, to well-known brands like Bumble Bee and down to influential traders like FCF and Aneka Tuna Indonesia (ATI), “Big Seafood” could actually help turn the tide towards a more sustainable and just future for fisheries and fishers.
We’re calling on seafood companies to:
- End isolation at sea by mandating free, accessible, and secure WiFi on all vessels they source from;
- Limit time that fishers are at sea, at maximum of 3 months between port visits;
- And ensure there is 100% observer coverage on all source vessels;
By signing this petition, you will join a global movement sending a clear message to seafood industry players: it’s time to end isolation at sea and exploitation in the seafood supply chain.
Protect oceans, protect workers
The entire fishing and seafood industry must protect our oceans and uphold essential workers rights at sea. From the ocean to supermarket shelves, no company is free from this responsibility – least of all those raking in the profits, while people in their supply chain, on the other side of the world, often report conditions of forced labour, and illegal fishing activities.
