Across the globe, a wave of protest is rising against the relentless buildout of massive data centers fueled by the AI boom. Citizens are standing together to defend their rights against mega projects imposed without their consent. In Malaysia, the Netherlands and the US, local opposition has already forced the authorities to take action.
Tech giants like Amazon and Nvidia are both the architects of the AI frenzy and its chief beneficiaries. We have a critical, once-in-a-generation window to pause and rethink this unprecedented growth before it destroys the planet. The explosion of AI mega factories doesn’t just impact local communities; it poses a direct threat to our collective future. If we fail to stop them, they will ravage the climate, dragging dirty fossil fuels like gas and coal back into service. Their technology will be used to undermine our fundamental rights and freedoms through mass surveillance, data exploitation, and AI-enabled warfare.
Technology should make our collective future safer and better: fostering genuine human connection, advancing knowledge and science, and serving public well-being rather than corporations that already wield far too much power. A halt on new mega data centers is the circuit breaker we urgently need to force governments to hold tech giants accountable. Together with allies across the climate, legal, and digital rights movements we call on decision-makers to immediately halt approvals for new mega data centres until robust, legally binding social and environmental criteria are written into national law.
These criteria include:
- Not compromising a just transition away from fossil fuels.
- Using 100% renewable energy without disrupting the electricity grid or increasing energy bills for everyday consumers.
- Not drawing on critical minerals and water until the needs of people and nature have been met.
- Strict environmental standards.
- The data and AI applications they enable must do no harm.
