Take the world’s biggest meat company to court
The global meat industry is dominated by a handful of corporations that are profiteering from climate and nature destruction, and pushing us to an ecological tipping point, while eroding public health and trampling the human rights of workers and communities.
The billionaires who run these mega corporations operate in the shadows – exemplified by the biggest of them all: JBS. Despite being the largest meat company on earth, you have probably never heard of them. And now they are plotting a global expansion that threatens to further imperil our shared planet.
This can not continue. That’s why Greenpeace Netherlands is taking them to court. It is time to stop JBS’s aggressive global expansion, force them to reveal their dangerous impacts, and drag their planet cooking business model into the light.
We need to stop the expansion of the world’s largest meat empire
JBS, the world’s largest meat company led by the billionaire Batista Brothers, is plotting a massive $6 billion global expansion. Nearly half of that is earmarked to export their destructive industrial business model into Nigeria.
Based on their business model and bitter legacy in the Amazon rainforest, and a track record of corruption, broken promises and links to human rights abuses there is every reason to believe that JBS’ aggressive expansion into sub-Saharan Africa will lock-in spiralling emissions, accelerating climate crisis and causing irreversible environmental damage, and risk displacing local farmers and communities. All to line the pockets of wealthy international elites.
This isn’t just an environmental disaster waiting to happen. It’s also a direct threat to the food sovereignty of Nigerian communities. By cutting corporate deals behind closed doors, JBS is operating exactly like the oil giants of the past, imposing a neocolonial, extractive system on local communities with dangerous impacts that will be felt all around the globe.
JBS is still refusing to be transparent. They did not comply with our demand to release assessments of the impact their expansion will have. They have yet to listen to frontline communities. They think they can hide, delay, and destroy. They think they can operate in the shadows and dodge accountability.
But, we are the many, they are the few.
