Rang-tan's Story

What is dirty palm oil?

What are we defending?

Palm oil comes from the fruit of the oil palm, which is grown in plantations in tropical countries like Indonesia. Greenpeace investigators have discovered that companies like Unilever, Nestlé and Mondelez are still buying palm oil from suppliers that trash rainforests - dirty palm oil. We can change this. Palm oil can be produced without destroying rainforests, and each of these brands has promised to stop buying dirty palm oil by 2020. So we’re standing with people from all over the world to hold brands to their word and get them to drop dirty palm oil before it's too late.

Indonesia’s rainforests are the third largest on Earth. Its destruction for palm oil is a disaster for wildlife, people and our climate. They are home to 10 to 15% of all known species of plants, mammals and birds. Half the orangutan population has been wiped out in just 16 years. These majestic creatures are on the brink of extinction. Palm oil companies are stealing land from local communities, destroying homes and clearing farms that have been in families for generations. These forests are also vital in regulating the Earth’s atmosphere, and are our strongest defence against climate change.
