25 February 2026, Quezon City — As Filipinos mark the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power, a peaceful protest by millions that toppled the 20-year Marcos dictatorship, Greenpeace Philippines joined thousands of Filipinos and fellow environmentalists demanding the investigation, prosecution, and dismissal of high ranking officials involved in the flood control scandal[1].
Greenpeace Climate Campaigner Virginia Benosa-Llorin said:
“Greenpeace is here in solidarity with millions of Filipinos who are expressing their indignation over the yet unresolved corruption scandal, and the systems of impunity, opacity, and lack of accountability that enable it. We are calling on the government to ensure swift, independent investigations and real accountability, including dismissal and jail time for all officials, including high ranking ones, found guilty.
This is not just corruption—it compounds climate injustice. Massive corruption and greed are undermining the ability of millions of Filipinos to survive in the face of climate change. Funds meant to protect communities from floods and extreme weather were stolen, while families are left to evacuate, lose their homes, and bury their dead.
Accountability must also reach beyond government halls to the giant fossil fuel companies that continue to profit while fueling the climate crisis that exacerbates flooding and other impacts. Communities are paying the price for both corruption and corporate greed. Lahat ng sangkot, dapat managot.”
In this historic day of resistance, Greenpeace Philippines supports the Filipinos’ calls to:
- Investigate and jail all corrupt officials found to be involved in the flood control scandal
- Pass the Anti-Dynasty Bill and the Freedom of Information Bill
- End corruption and put in place measures to ensure transparency in government
- Institute systems for greater people participation, and public access to government information
- Place mechanisms to safeguard climate funds from corruption
