Greenpeace stands for positive change through action. We defend the natural world and promote peace.

As a global organisation, Greenpeace focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment.

We investigate, expose and confront environmental abuse by governments and corporations around the world.

We champion environmentally responsible and socially just solutions, including scientific and technical innovation.

We promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices.

We use high-profile, non-violent direct action, research, lobbying, and quiet diplomacy to pursue our goals and raise the level and quality of public debate as the catalyst for change.

Greenpeace is an independent, not-for-profit organisation

To maintain our independence, Greenpeace does not solicit or accept funding from governments, corporations or political parties.

Greenpeace does not seek or accept donations that could compromise its independence, aims, objectives or integrity.

Greenpeace relies on grant-support from foundations and the voluntary donations of individual supporters like you.

Greenpeace is committed to the principles of non-violence, political independence and internationalism.

Greenpeace is non-party political, we do not align ourselves with any political party. In exposing threats to the environment and in working to find solutions, Greenpeace has no permanent allies or enemies.

The Greenpeace International office is based in the Netherlands. Greenpeace has over 2.6 million supporters worldwide and a presence in 41 regions and nations across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

Choosing campaigns

There are many urgent environmental issues that need to be addressed. To ensure the best use of our resources Greenpeace New Zealand works with Greenpeace International to target campaigns that need global action, making relevant the local situation in the big picture.

With limited resources we find that to focus on a small number of campaigns at any one time is the most effective way to achieve real change for the environment.

Greenpeace New Zealand’s work includes:

  • Promoting the use of renewable energy and the phasing-out of fossil fuel use in order to stop climate change
  • Defending our oceans and marine life from destructive fishing methods, overfishing, whaling and pollution
  • Protecting ancient forests and the animals and people that depend on them
  • Eliminating toxic chemicals, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and preventing the dumping of toxic waste
  • Preventing the release of genetically engineered organisms into nature to protect the health of humans and the biodiversity of the planet
  • Protecting future generations and the environment from the effects of nuclear power, its accidents, contamination and waste
  • Promoting world peace and disarmament
