Canterbury’s local elections are a critical moment to protect fresh water from dairy expansions – and by working together we can make a difference! Here are four easy things you can do to call on Environment Canterbury candidates to protect lakes, rivers, and drinking water in the 2025 local elections.
1. Sign the petition to end dairy expansions in Canterbury
Intensive dairy farming is the number one source of freshwater pollution in Waitaha/Canterbury.
But since the start of 2025, Environment Canterbury has approved the addition of more than 16 thousand dairy cattle on the Canterbury plains.
We’re asking everyone – no matter where they live – to join us in calling on Environment Canterbury to end dairy conversions and protect lakes, rivers, and drinking water from dairy pollution.

Join us in calling on Environment Canterbury to commit to enduring freshwater protections that ensure safe drinking water and swimmable rivers for all.
Take Action2. Check that you’re enrolled to vote and your details are correct.
The most impactful thing you can do in the upcoming local elections to protect Canterbury’s fresh water is to participate.
The more people who vote the better, because we have a higher chance of councillors around the table who will prioritise the health of fresh water, and the health of our communities.
Head online to vote.nz to check that you’re enrolled and find out if your details are up-to-date!
3. Volunteer with our Vote Clean Drinking Water campaign to protect fresh water
Everywhere we go in Canterbury, we hear that people are deeply concerned about the health of water. Lakes and rivers are increasingly unswimmable, and many people cannot drink the water coming out of their kitchen tap.
We’re running an ambitious campaign to make clean drinking water a priority in this local election – and we need your help!
Head to greenpeace.nz/votewater to sign up to volunteer with our campaign, or hit the button below!
4. Ask your candidates what they’re doing to protect fresh water
The candidates running for Environment Canterbury are competing for YOUR vote – so they need to know that clean drinking water is important to you.
Look up Environment Canterbury candidates for your ward online and write to them to share your concerns about the health of water in the region!
