Fonterra HQ slimed by Greenpeace
Greenpeace activists set up a quarantine zone at Fonterra’s Auckland HQ on the day of their Shareholders’ Fund Meeting, surrounding the dairy giant with green slime to protest nitrate contamination.

Fonterra HQ shutdown!
15 December 2025: Greenpeace activists turned Fonterra’s Shareholders Fund meeting into a nitrate emergency quarantine zone!
There’s a nitrate crisis in rural New Zealand and that crisis starts right here at Fonterra HQ. It’s easy for Fonterra executives in their shiny offices to ignore the growing nitrate crisis that they have caused in rural New Zealand, so we’ve brought the crisis to their front door.

The problem
New Zealand simply has too many cows. Fonterra’s oversized dairy farms use too much synthetic nitrogen fertiliser to feed all of them,, leading to cow urine and fertiliser ending up in groundwater supplies and contaminating them with nitrate.
Eventually, this ends up in people’s drinking water, putting them at increased risk of bowel cancer, preterm birth, and in severe cases, Blue Baby syndrome.
The worst of this crisis is in Canterbury, where the regional council has declared a nitrate emergency. It’s only a matter of time before other regions follow suit,- because the intensive dairy industry is expanding, and they’re doing it fast.
Fonterra executives and shareholders are making huge profits while rendering rural communities’ water undrinkable. They have chosen to put the lives of rural New Zealanders at risk for the sake of lining their pockets.
The solution
We are experiencing a nitrate crisis. It’s time for Fonterra to act by reducing the size of their dairy herd immediately. There can be no more dairy expansions.
And if Fonterra won’t do it, then the Government must. We’re calling on Parliament to put an end to all dairy expansion – and you can join us!
