Since October 2023, violence by Israeli authorities has claimed more than 55,000 Palestinian lives – half of them women and children. The ongoing blockade of aid to Gaza has placed over two million people on the precipice of famine.
The horror unfolding in Gaza must stop.
The New Zealand Government’s recent move to sanction just two of the most extreme figures in Israel’s government is nowhere near enough. They must do more than symbolic actions.
Greenpeace is calling on the Government to impose meaningful sanctions on Israel. That means sanctioning all individuals and entities that are responsible for, and associated with, the unlawful presence of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. They must be prevented from moving assets to Aotearoa or using New Zealand’s financial system to circumvent sanctions that may be imposed by other countries in the future, and must freeze assets already located here.
This is what real action to uphold international law looks like. We can’t stand by as this genocide continues. Now is the time to act.
The Government should immediately adopt the Unlawful Occupation of Palestine Sanctions Bill, which is already drafted and is a concrete step that would allow Aotearoa to impose real political and economic pressure on those responsible for these atrocities.
Sanctions must also be implemented on the trade of weapons, ammunition, military vehicles and equipment, and spare parts or accessories and the financial services, which assist with the export, manufacture, or transfer of these military assets. Sanctions must also be applied to any other assets or services of economic or strategic importance to the Government of Israel.
