In reaction to Jackson Wijaya becoming the beneficial owner of both Domtar, formerly known as Paper Excellence, and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), Priyanka Vittal, Legal Counsel, Greenpeace Canada, said:
“Greenpeace Canada has been sounding the alarm about the relationship between Paper Excellence and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) for years now. Despite Paper Excellence’s constant denial regarding its relationship with APP, the elusive Jackson Wijaya has become the beneficial sole owner of both Domtar, formerly known as Paper Excellence, and Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) making the link undeniable. This is extremely concerning to us given APP’s poor environmental and human rights record.
Paper Excellence, which has rebranded under Domtar, is now the largest logging company in the entire country having gobbled up many of Canada’s private and publicly traded logging companies. This has happened under the nose of the Competition Bureau and the Canadian government and we are left scratching our heads how the government and regulators have outright given control of 22 million hectares of forests to a monopoly that has so far acted with little transparency. Beyond the obvious economic concerns, our forests are in crisis and now we’ve handed over ownership of them to a notoriously private family whose past environmental record leaves us deeply concerned about the future of Canada’s forests and the communities and ecosystems that rely on them.”
