Urge the tech suppliers to clean up its act
In a digitized world, smartphones, VR, and AI bring us undeniable convenience and efficiency. However, electronics manufacturing, including chipmaking, is one of the fastest growing sources of global emissions.
According to Greenpeace East Asia, by 2030, semiconductor manufacturing alone is on track to consume 237 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity globally, close to Australia’s annual electricity consumption in 2021.
In the age of AI, it’s more urgent than ever that the tech suppliers clean up its act!
Currently, the major tech suppliers are targeting to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2040, 2050, or not at all!
This is too late!
Why does this matter?
While consumer-facing brands such as Apple have reported achieving 100% renewable energy across their own operations, according to Greenpeace East Asia and the City University of Hong Kong, none of their leading tech suppliers (including TSMC, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Luxshare Precision, Goertek, Foxconn, Pegatron, Samsung Display, LG Display, AUO, BOE, UMC, and Innolux) have committed to doing so by 2030.
According to the World Economic Forum and Boston Consulting Group, the supply chain currently contributes to over 70% of the electronics sector’s emissions. Tech suppliers should not hide in the shadows of big brands, avoiding responsibility to take the initiative.
We need to amplify public voices and demand greater accountability and action from these companies in order to move toward a cleaner tech future. It’s more urgent than ever that the tech industry clean up its act and transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030. Sign the petition now.
