  • Greenpeace to launch global digital innovation lab

    Michael Silberman, the brain behind the "Meetup" grassroots organizing strategy used by Howard Dean’s presidential campaign and co-founder of digital consultancy EchoDitto, is joining Greenpeace to launch a new, global digital mobilization lab. The Lab will be a dynamic, forward-looking space that will work with Greenpeace and allies in 42 countries to envision, test, and roll out creative new means of communicating, organizing, and fundraising online.

    Digital innovation – how we use mobile phones, tablets, email, and other technologies – will happen at the edges of organizations and networks. The Lab is designed to serve as a collaborative hub among networks – inside and outside of Greenpeace – to find, test, and push the envelope on the use of technology in campaigns. Green...   • In its latest move to cover up the truth about its Arctic drilling, Arctic oil driller Cairn Energy has obtained an extraordinary, wide-ranging legal interdict (injunction) against Greenpeace UK and Greenpeace International, gagging them from posting Tweets and Facebook updates containing photos of yesterday's occupation of their Edinburgh headquarters.

    The interdict also demands Greenpeace UK remove Tweets and Facebook updates carrying pictures of protesters dressed as polar bears - and that they even retract photographs issued to national newspapers!

    Specifically, the court order prohibits "disseminating, printing, uploading, sharing, copying or otherwise publishing any images, photographs, pictures or other material (or copies thereof) taken or recorded by Greenpeace UK activists ... Read more >

  • VW film: A YouTube U-Turn

    We still have to turn VW away from the Dark Side, but we’ve scored a small victory for internet freedom along the way.

    A few days into our campaign while our Volkswagen film was the most shared ‘ad’ in the world, YouTube suspended it after a complaint from Lucasfilm.

    We thought it strange that our film would be taken down three days into our campaign, while dozens of other parodies of the same Volkswagen advert – including one by the BBC – remained untouched.

    Greenpeace International filed a counter notification via YouTube's website, protesting the censorship of the film and explaining that as a parody of VW’s commercial, any “references and clips from Star Wars were transformed for the purposes of commentary and criticism” (here's the full statement).

  • Stop press: The breaking news from over the weekend was that the Government has had to concede that the wheels are starting to come off its petroleum wagon.

    Late on Friday, we received confirmation from the Ministry for Economic Development that two of the key permit blocks that were up for grabs - Northland and Reinga - have failed to sell. In true, cynical fashion they tried to bury this news in some opaque and ambiguous statement on their website (here).

    The significance of this is that these blocks were the centre piece of the Government's sales pitch - the supposed crown jewels of the nation’s oil prospects - and the ones that were going to make us all rich.   • XM3N mannequins reveal their mission: To challenge Nike and Adidas to "Detox"

    Having mysteriously quit their day-jobs as retail store mannequins to spend a few weeks appearing at some of the world's most iconic locations bearing the Chinese symbol for water on their bodies, the XM3N have had a busy 48 hours laying down the "Detox" challenge to the world's biggest sports brands.

    It all started when one of the tireless messengers was spotted at Wednesday morning's Beijing Press conference, where Greenpeace presented the findings of a year-long investigation into toxic water pollution.   • A few moments ago, fifty polar bears entered and occupied Cairn Energy's headquarters in Edinburgh, England. Their purpose? To look for Cairn's elusive Arctic oil spill response plan, and to take your messages to the heart of the company.

    The fragile world of the Arctic - home to the Polar bear, the Narwhal whale and scores of other species found nowhere else on Earth, as well as to four million humans who rely on the unique balance of nature for their economy and survival - is under threat.

  • Campaigning to save the oceans by changing European fishing

    A few months ago I lived on an Australian beach with rainforest for a backyard. Why would I leave this behind to work in rainy Belgium? Because some time ago, having largely emptied their own seas, super-sized European fishing boats began plundering Pacific waters. One of the only ways to stop them is to fix the European Union’s fishing rules.

    A once-in-a-decade shake-up of these rules, known as the Common Fisheries Policy, started today in Brussels. For the next couple of years, members of the European Parliament and their corresponding governments, including large fishing nations like Spain, will battle it out until the new rules are finally agreed.

  • Shark finning – for shame, New Zealand!

    You've got to wonder what sort of barbaric backwater you're living in when Taiwan overtakes your country in its efforts to crack down on shark finning.

    The last few of weeks have brought some great news for the world's sharks. Fiji's Ministry of Fisheries has announced it is drafting legislation, which it hopes will be adopted by the end of the year, banning all trade in shark meat. Fiji, known for its world class shark diving, will join Palau as a champion for sharks in the Pacific. French Polynesia, American Samoa and Australia also have legislation banning shark finning, and Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands both banned finning earlier this year.
