According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ benchmark, Cities need 60 buses per one lakh citizens. Based on this benchmark, Delhi needs 18000 buses for its 32 million people, but there are only around 7000 buses in the city. More buses must be procured on a priority basis and a commitment must be made to have a fleet of 11000 buses by 2023. Electric buses powered by renewable energy should be prioritized while augmenting the bus fleet size.

Demand Better Transportation For Clean Air

Abolish bus fares for sections of population such as children, aged, specially-abled etc. to make public transport affordable and inclusive.

Upgrade all buses to low-floor models in order to make them more accessible.

Introduce feeder buses exclusively for women and other sexual minorities to ensure safety and last mile connectivity.

Improve services by reducing the waiting time and creating dedicated bus lanes for improved carrying capacity per hour. Ensure the implementation of 15 dedicated bus lanes (and expand to other road corridors) to improve the average bus speed and reliability of service.

Build an integrated Bus Rapid Transit System to increase the efficiency and capacity of the public bus. The integration of the public transport system (Metro and public bus) with non-motorised transport (NMT) will make passenger interchange seamless and improve first and last-mile connectivity.

All bus stops need adequate amenities including well-lit shelter, toilets, public announcement and information display systems and CCTV cameras. Equip buses with a ‘request stop’ facility for women, children and sexual minorities for safe travel.

Incentivise citizens to use the public bus by announcing free public transport in certain networks, especially in high pollution and high congestion areas.
