WHY DOES HEAT MATTER?
Health
Heat can be DEADLY. India recorded over 40,000 suspected heatstroke cases in 2024, yet many heat deaths go uncounted—because doctors lack clear guidelines. Each death caused due to heat, human and non-human, is a preventable one.
Water
Water is Survival. Over 100 million Indians lack access to safe drinking water, making extreme heat even deadlier. Dehydration can cause dizziness, organ failure, and death—yet relief is out of reach for many. We’re setting up hydration centers across the city to ensure lifesaving water access! You can too!
Informal Sector
Gig workers, street vendors, and delivery riders have no choice but to work under a burning sky. No water, no shade, no respite. We’re pushing for policies that safeguard workers from extreme heat—because no one should risk their life for a paycheck.
Biodiversity
Birds dropping mid-flight, monkeys drowning in search of water, stray dogs collapsing from heat exhaustion—Delhi’s wildlife is in crisis. The true toll remains unknown, but the urgency is clear. We must act to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
How are Delhiites Showing up? #DelhiRising
While we at Greenpeace hold the government accountable, advocating for notifying heatwaves as a national disaster so appropriate mitigation and adaptation funds are made available to states—we must all act—supporting efforts that protect outdoor and gig workers, leaving water out for birds and animals, checking in on neighbours, and standing in solidarity with those on the frontlines of this crisis.
