This second report of Greenpeace Bulgaria examines the relationship between water and coal, particularly focusing on two alarming aspects of the operations of thermal power plants in the country. Our research demonstrates that water scarcity and pollution in Bulgaria are linked to the processes of the coal industry – from mining and processing the coal to its burning in the thermal power plants.
The damage of burning coal is too big, diverse and growing for the coal industry to continue to be supported by the Bulgarian government. Immediate actions are required for the gradual step-out of the coal era. “Morally“ old power plant should be close down immediately and larger ones should be gradually phased out if we want to secure the quality and quantity of our precious water reserves.
