India’s solar dreams

Why this matters

To combat climate change and keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 Degree Celsius, the Indian government has pledged to achieve 100 GW of solar power in the next four years. While 60 GW has been earmarked for large-scale solar projects, 40 GW has been set aside for decentralised solar power, which includes installing rooftop solar panels, solar powered microgrids, solar irrigation pumps etc. Almost every state has a solar policy in place. The central government too has introduced schemes to make solar power attractive.

While we are making good progress in large scale solar projects, India is still lagging far behind our decentralised renewable energy targets with less than 1.861 GW installed as of March 2017. At the current pace, India can only achieve 6 GW of rooftop solar in metro cities  by 2022. The rest of it has to come from smaller towns, rural locations, grid connected solar pumps and other distributed solar applications. This would need more incentives and awareness programmes from the government. We are optimistic and we know, when people will collectively press for the schemes to be rolled out, they will win.
