In a significant step towards gender equity and environmental justice, Delhi became India’s first state/UT to offer free public bus transport for women of all ages and social backgrounds Launched in October 2019, this fare-free bus travel initiative—known as the Pink Ticket scheme—has reached the milestone of issuing 100 crore pink tickets by 2024.
Greenpeace India’s study sheds light on the benefits and challenges of the Pink Ticket scheme and its impact on women’s lives. Women have shared positive feedback, emphasizing the scheme’s transformative role in enhancing their mobility, safety, and access to essential services. However, the study also uncovers challenges, particularly concerning social dynamics and public behavior, that impact the scheme’s effectiveness.
The report tries to bring attention towards how the need for better public bus transport infrastructure, reliable public bus transport, more number of public buses etc is necessary for the success of this scheme. Such a scheme incentivizes public transport and helps in fighting climate change by reimagining our cities as sustainable and ecological spaces.
