Santiago, Chile — Greenpeace Chile staged a protest today to demonstrate how climate change is dramatically impacting the country. At the former lake, Laguna Aculeo, which today is a dried-up wasteland, Greenpeace volunteers displayed images taken in earlier years depicting the once-healthy waters and a giant banner, calling for action.
“This lake used to be full of water and biodiversity. In only a few years it has run dry, illustrating the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Chile is experiencing devastating droughts, compounded by weak action on climate. From bushfires in Australia, to record floods in Venice, the extreme consequences of the climate crisis are being felt by communities around the world now,” said Matías Asun, National Director of Greenpeace Chile.
While the global climate summit COP25 has moved to Madrid, the presidency of the summit remains with Chile. It therefore comes to Chile’s government to show leadership, both by example in Chile, and globally, by driving ambition through COP25.
Asun continued, “This climate emergency has been brought to you by runaway capitalism, benefitting the few by bulldozing the many. But now, people are coming together to say ‘no’ to business as usual. ‘No’ to a neo-liberal system that places the burden on the individual. The costs of the transition cannot and should not be passed on to the people: the rapid and unequivocal halving of emissions in the next decade must be done with and for everyone. Social justice has to be at the heart of a zero carbon world.”
At COP25 Greenpeace expects decision makers to:
- Act urgently to enhance their climate action targets, and outline a roadmap for NDC submissions in 2020
- Ensure the costs of the energy transition are not passed down to the people, and that vulnerable communities are supported to react to climate impacts
- Avoid riddling the Paris Agreement with carbon market loopholes
- Listen to the science and the people, not to powerful extractive industries that block climate progress

A pocos días del inicio de la COP25 y en medio de los llamados de que la próxima Constitución asegure derechos medioambientales, y con una serie de imágenes que exhiben el antes y el ahora de la laguna de Aculeo, Greenpeace denunció cómo el cambio climático, la sequía y la crisis hídrica están impactando de manera dramática extensas zonas de Chile.
Convertida hoy en una extensa superficie seca, la laguna de Aculeo, uno de los espacios recreacionales más visitados por los habitantes de Santiago hasta hace unos años, hoy tiene la fisonomía de un desierto con muelles fantasma y embarcaciones que descansan sobre la tierra.
“En este lugar que alguna vez fue una enorme y hermosa laguna hemos querido graficar los dramáticos efectos del cambio climático, los que se están manifestando con la peor sequía en la historia de Chile, aumento de las temperaturas, una dramática disminución de las precipitaciones, pero de manera especial el escaso resguardo constitucional que ha tenido hasta hoy el agua en nuestro país”, dijo Matías Asun, director nacional de Greenpeace en Chile.
