The equivalent of one truckload of plastic enters the ocean every minute — but where is it all coming from? Up until recently, we weren’t sure. But to solve the plastic pollution crisis, we knew we needed to arm ourselves with the best information possible.
So, together with our partners in the Break Free From Plastic movement, we enlisted the help of 10,000 volunteers across 42 countries to embark on the world’s most ambitious plastic cleanup and brand audit project yet. Nine months, six continents, 239 cleanup events, and more than 187,000 pieces of trash later, we now have the most comprehensive snapshot to date of how corporations are contributing to the global plastic pollution problem.
They are, in order from most to least commonly found in global brand audits:
- Mondelez International
- Procter & Gamble
- Perfetti van Melle
- Mars Incorporated
And that’s just the top ten out of hundreds of multinational brands contributing to plastic pollution across the globe.
Now comes the important part: we have to hold these brands accountable for their plastic pollution.
Let’s talk about Coke. Coke-branded plastic was not only found in 40 of the 42 participating countries, it’s the only brand to rank in the top three on all six continents (just missing Antarctica, but unfortunately there’s plastic there, too). Just last week, the crew on board the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise even found an intact Coke bottle in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, hundreds of kilometres from any inhabited land.
As some of the largest companies in the world, Coke, PepsiCo, Nestle, and the others on this list have the chance to be part of the solution to the plastic crisis. Instead, they remain a part of the problem, selling us plastic drink containers and packaging we have no choice but to throw away.
Here’s how you can call out Coke and all the corporations polluting our oceans for profit.
We all have a role to play in tackling plastic pollution. But the reality is, individual consumers are already bearing the burden of this crisis. We’re swapping plastic bottles for reusable glass and metal, ditching disposable straws, avoiding unnecessary packaging in our grocery stores, and cleaning up our beaches as best we can. But there’s only so much we can do if companies don’t step up and provide more sustainable choices.
To solve this problem, we need to change the entire system — from how our products are made to what happens when we’re done with them. And we need corporations to be part of the solution.
Here’s what you can do. Whenever you see a piece of plastic where it doesn’t belong, pick it up, take a photo, and share it on social media using #IsThisYours. Don’t forget to tag the brand!

All around the world, Greenpeace volunteers are hard at work conducting cleanups and brand audits to determine which corporations are the worst offenders when it comes to plastic pollution. Want to participate? It’s easy! Any time you find a piece of plastic where it doesn’t belong, pick it up, take a photo, and share it on social media using #IsThisYours — don’t forget to tag the brand! . . . . #BreakFreeFromPlastic #PointlessPlastic #PlasticPollution #plastic #pollution #recycling #zerowaste #green #ecoconscious #greenliving #nature #oceans #Greenpeace #environment #activism #inspiration #photooftheday #instadaily
Together, we can be the generation that ends ocean plastic pollution. Don’t forget to read the full Break Free From Plastic global brand audit report for more information on the corporations contributing to ocean pollution — and what you can do about it.
Together we can create a new normal that leaves single-use products behind.

We think when we vote that gives us a voice the problem seems to be the governments of countries around the world are in the end controlled by multinational corporations banking institutions and religious organisations and their agendas and profits will always come first the politicians will tell their people that jobs are more important than the environment which is short term thinking say no to polluting the oceans and land with plastic
Start treating these companies like the criminal organisations they are. Take their freedom and start confiscating their assets. Why should they continue to prosper while being protected by a society they’re destroying.
Wow you are great
What we should keep polluting
Tip: people get more motivated to help the environment if all the news weren’t so negative. We all already know that there is a crisis and that it’s an urgent matter, but what we need to know is how to contribute and that there are people that have done progress. We need to know that people have succeeded. Almost everybody thinks that it’s already to late to do something because of all the accusations and comments everywhere saying that the world is “going under”. That’s not what we need. Does a child perform well if you tell it everything it did wrong? No! You believe in it and keep motivating it! That’s what we need. Motivation.
Please have all the companies to pay for the fines of using the environment damage to send them the evidence from them products to email back to them head office have green peace peoples to give them the damage that they have caused please have everyone to sign an petition to end plastic materials with an banned from the materials being ever used again
All plastic water bottles must be replaced by aluminum cans,& packaging as should be buckets, bowls & household items. All ships over the world which are no longer being used should be donated to the 12yr count down to save our planet earth- people in jail could work off there sentences by helping to clean up those large plastic ocean eddies like the one between Hawaii & USA - the size of QLD in Australia/or twice the size of France. & that not the only 1 in the ocean. Even if we could remove all the plastic visible to the human eye- there are still the tiny nodules of plastic between the south & north pole a 1/300th of the size of a piece of plankton- it will take 2000 - 5000yrs B4 the nodules dissolve entirely & will wipe out 80% of all marine life. There should be heavy penalties for people dumping plastic & not $ fines but they should be made to pick up plastic & rubbish-as a fine won't teach them anything. Fishing permits should be enforced as fish don't have a chance with the now a days technology. There should be weekly news updates on these massive ocean sea eddies of plastic in the ocean. It was once on the news in January 2018 & nothing since- people should be constantly kept up to date on this problem,& the amount of plastic that is washed up on the beachs in Bali & all the other tourists beaches. Bali employees people to pick up all the plastic thats been washed up on the beach at 3-4am every morning, so all the rubbish has gone B4 the tourists go to the beach in the morning. This should be on the news every NIGHT so its infront of there faces. Its only then that people-will bseeegin to see how bad this problem really is. & taught at schools in every country. We have 12yrs to turn this around B4 it becomes irreversible. All fossil fuel should be outlawed & only solar & wind turbines should be used. & all the waste uranium should be put in a rocket & sent into the sun & then all uranium facilities should be shut down 4ever.
I agree. Unfortunately our obsolete/corrupt politicians stick with the status quo (big oil companies, energy...) and corporate ‘legal’ lobbying groups pay billions to ensure their survival. More money should be given to innovative companies that are beneficial for the environment.
All plastic beverage bottles should be banned. Also the companies should pay for all the pollution they have already created.
Nice share! thanks for the post... https://amrepinspect.com/manufacturing-audits/
I AM,WE ARE CHANGE! HOLD THE YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE AND THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE.
How about Green peace starting a one day boycott campaign on boycotting plastics. This would raise public awareness . The boycott could focus on the 10 big corporations who continue to use throw away plastics such as coca cola, pepsi, nestle . Take the lead Green peace.!!
Ugh. Pointing fingers on Instagram doesn't enact change, it just makes people angry. And the only response you'll get from a corporation will be a marketing operation. There are so many alternatives out there and all a person needs to do is alter their lifestyle in minor ways to make a huge impact. Adopt different habits, teach them to others and spread the mindset. So much household plastic use can be easily replaced, and it can be cheaper for you too.
The plastic problem haunts me on a regular basis! I know plastic is not biodegradable, you can't burn it without polluting the air we breathe. I worry about our earth and future generations! I worry about the oceans and know that if trash is disposed of long enough in the current manner our oceans will simply become a large floating garbage dump. I care enough about the future of our planet to sign up for this program and hope that it will have a positive impact on how my trash today affects future generations tomorrow!
Boycott boycott boycott. Like it was done in SOUTH AFRICA during late 70`s 80`s against apartheid and it did work - so it must be done to all 10. There must be other products 1 can rely on if 1 only opened ones eyes to look around and take notice . The directors of all these companies should be hit hard where it hurts [in the back pocket]- like 40% of their annual salary or the share holders- like 50% of the companies annual profits . Just MAYBE they will take notice then- MAYBE. Hit them all where it hurts most- MONEY and BOYCOTT their products today.
what it is
Without Plastic use permits and regulation, without laws punishable by fines and imprisonment, plastic is just another part of the acute extinction event of late, on earth. What I really don't understand is; why is something so simple and obvious, is taking so long? It's not like any manufacturer is going to lose money. The extra cost of business is inevitably passed on to the consumer. Don't feel like your paying for the past; rather you are paying for the future. We don't have to die this young.
When talking about replacing plastic, it's only viable once we have a far higher percentage of renewable energy in usage as the alternatives to plastic are far more energy intensive in production. Replacing plastic bottles with glass bottles would increase the emissions per bottle immensly, which is why I believe that in the current situation banning plastic is short sighted measure. Also since most of the plastic waste is from the developing world, wouldn't it be better to levy a tax on plastic to improve waste collection in these countries? A dollar spent there would probably have a greater effect than a dollar spent in the developed world.
Greenpeace do you have a reply for this. If it costs more energy to make glass than plastic there is no benefit. Reply please.
Very fair point, we should obviously be concerned about greenhouse gas emissions as well, and the current switch may contribute to increased energy consumption but if we look at charts and trends of the energy producers of all G7 countries we see that the output of Renewable energy (Solar, Hydro, Wind) is doubling nearly every 5 years. We're already on the right course to reducing carbon footprints of most industrial manufacturing because the power from the grid is getting 4 times cleaner each decade. I believe that makes now the right time to start to switch away from plastics even at the cost of higher energy consumption because it will take many years before the switch to alternatives such as glass is completed and we're already on track to cleaner electricity with many renewable energy projects underway following a trend across the world.
but isn't it the consumers fault not the company itself
Great question. But think about it this way: if your sink is overflowing with water what is the first thing you do? Mop up the floor? Scoop up the water? Or turn off the tap? No amount of recycling or beach clean ups can get us out of this plastic crisis, and plastic producers are set to increase production by an additional 40% over the next decade. That’s why to truly turn off the tap on plastic we need to stop its production in the first place.
How can we get the companies to hear us? Most of them will just ignore us because they simply dont care as long as they have their money, unfortunately a lot of poeple in our world are like that
Hi Bia. The more that people speak up and #BreakFreeFromPlastic, the more that companies will listen and it will be impossible to ignore! Find out more here https://www.greenpeace.org/international/act/lets-end-the-age-of-plastic/
You DO have a choice. Quit buying those products. Then you would not be faced with no option but to throw it away. Duh. You are making a mistake, IMO, by continually putting the entire blame and responsibility on the manufacturers, rather than the consumers.
We need to become Liliputs from the Gullivers that we are in terms of our footprints! In Tezpur , Assam, Pravodhana, an NGO helps Puja celebrations go plastic free by employing villagers who make plates out of the fleshly trunk of the banana tree that goes abundantly here. Everyday for 5 days , an avoid 500 plates were made for the community feast. Each one of us can contribute to change!
Great initiative by your NGO. The solution to the single-use plastic pollution starts with awareness. Be conscious of the practices you are supporting every time you make a purchase. Even though the convenience of the single-use plastic is for 10-12 minutes but the environmental damage it causes are far flung. This is our planet let’s make a right decision and prohibit single-use plastic. The single-use plastic represents today’s throwaway culture. In fact, most plastic ends up in our ocean, water ways, landfills and in the environment. It is our responsibility to do our part in curbing the problem, starting with your own personal choice. Inspire, your family and friends into ditching cheap single-use plastic, because in the long run, this single-use plastic is damaging to our environment. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Thank you for all your hardwork, greenpeace! You are all awesome! Dear companies, now's your chance to make a difference :)
This is why I do not drink any thing in plastic.
Could you hold our government officials responsible for legislaton to mandate plastic controls at the source? With helpful automated links based on zip code to "your officials". Thank you for taking the lead in this planet concious endeavor.
The big problem is people education, no improvement will be succesfull if this will not change! Corporations can and study lighter packages, using recyclable packaging ( paper, plastic other) but if people will not learn to keep garbage to bring home if a trash bin is not available or to use them when they are availavble, there will be no way to go out of this to issue. In every city where we leave, we see very often all kind of stupid things around, (less than in the past where TV, dish washers, mattresses etc. where thrown in the meadows) like bottles, plastic or glass, plastic bags, plastic papers, cigarettes residuals, dog dejections, etc. I think that education is not enough, checks must be done and significant fares assigned, is a pity but maturity and respect is not yet common sense !!! Isn't it ? Of course that any impact reduction, improvement to reduce waste to landfil, use of recycling/recycled materials etc. from the big plaeyers will be of help but will not solve the big problem. We cannot buy naked products otherwise we risk to pollute the world. It is such a pity to see fantastic places, streets, beaches, country sides, cities, full of waste that further than polluting deface also the landscape to our eyes.
I feel that as ENGLISH is the world language it would be a good idea to have ENGLISH in every coumtry on your listing. I live here in Germany and on your listing of countries there is English not mentioned. There are many English visitors to these countres. Please try that too. Thank You Very Much for what you are doing. I am an American and travel all over the Globe. I would like to see this printed in these countries too.
Don't you think it is time to stop producing plastic?
This is a very helpful website especially for research or guiding questions. You are also right
Definitely. It's time we think about the poor sea creatures who have to endure plastic as their food just so that we can have a bar of chocolate or a drink of coke #humanityisneedeed
As consumers it is often unavoidable to buy plastic packaging. The only effective way to stop or reduce plastic pollution is to force manufacturers to stop all plastic packaging. We also cannot rely on the consumer to solve the problem because in my opinion 90% or more of the world still doesn't care or is oblivious of the problem. I reckon 99.9% of cigarette smokers in the world still throw their cigarette butts and filters on the ground when outside.
