Read the report Global Hotspot and Emission Sources for SO2_August 2019
August 19th, 2019: New analyses of NASA data on the largest point sources of SO2 – one of the key pollutants contributing to deaths from air pollution worldwide – released by Greenpeace shows power plants burning coal and oil along with refineries are responsible for two-thirds of the anthropogenic SO2 emissions tracked by NASA. Oil refineries and metals smelters are the other major sources worldwide.
To accompany the briefing there is an online interactive map of the world’s worst sources of SO2 pollution, which allows further exploration of emission hotspots across different regions.
