The Problem

The Opportunity

Each year, vast areas of the Great Northern Forest are fragmented and destroyed as logging companies move further in. Ancient trees and biodiverse ecosystems are being turned into tissue paper and single-use products that we use only for a brief moment.

The continued destruction of this unique forest releases vast amounts of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and could turn it from a carbon store to a carbon bomb. This forest can protect us from the worst effects of climate change, but only if we protect it first.

Right now only 3% of the Great Northern Forest is protected. That’s not nearly enough.

The governments of Canada, Russia, Finland and Sweden need to increase their ambition to protect their forests The forest industry and corporations need to shift from a model of endless destruction and consumption, to sustainable management.

We can all do our part to reduce our own personal use of tissue and paper products to decrease demand on the forest. A global movement of people can and will determine the fate of the Great Northern Forest. We have the power and opportunity to demand its protection.

What happens to this forest, happens to us all.

The Great Northern Forest stores more carbon than all the tropical forests in the world
