Our vision

We believe optimism is a form of courage. We believe that a billion acts of courage can spark a brighter tomorrow. To that end we model courage, we champion courage, we share stories of courageous acts by our supporters and allies, we invite people out of their comfort zones to take courageous action with us, individually in their daily lives, and in community with others who share our commitment to a better world. A green and peaceful future is our quest. The heroes of our story are all of us who believe that a better world is not only within reach, but being built today.

Climate activist and super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) survivor Joanna Sustento starts an indefinite lone protest in front of the Philippine headquarters of Shell to call for climate justice. The protest highlights the huge role of fossil fuel companies, such as Shell, in fueling the climate crisis and the injustice and suffering experienced by vulnerable communities in the Philippines and around the world. Several Greenpeace France activists made an action in front of the Louvre museum to denounce the museum’s complicity with the oil major TotalEnergies. They stood up in front of the Louvre pyramid with banners “Let’s make a law for a world without oil” and “Ban fossil fuel propaganda”. By accepting money from a fossil fuel company with climaticide activity, the Louvre is complicit. As a cultural institution with international influence, the Louvre has a strong social responsibility. It must therefore take up the climate issue! Like all cultural institutions, the Louvre must end any partnership with the fossil industry, which is primarily responsible for greenhouse gas emissions. They also erected an 8-meter-high fake derrick that spewed non-toxic black smoke to symbolize the multinational oil and gas firm’s location within the museum. Further on, 10 activists displayed a banner “Climate: Total criminal, the Louvre accomplice” on the Louvre building. An actor played Patrick Pouyanne (TotalEnergies CEO) as a project manager of this skit.

Greenpeace started in 1971 when a group of 12 activists set sail to Amchitka island off Alaska to try and stop a US nuclear weapons test. Their old fishing boat was called “The Greenpeace”, and the money for the mission was raised with a concert. This is where our story begins. Read: Amchitka – the founding voyage
