Greenpeace USA’s response to the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP)

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (November 18, 2022) – In response to ConsenSys and 18 other firms releasing their Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP), Rolf Skar, Special Projects Manager at Greenpeace USA, said: “The Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP) is another example of crypto platforms taking the initiative to mitigate the climate crisis, leaving Bitcoin falling further behind as the world grapples with the climate crisis. Ethereum has already stopped using energy-intensive Proof of Work ‘mining.’ The ECP platform goes a step further, attempting to address Ethereum’s historic carbon footprint by investing in initiatives that could have a positive impact on the climate.

“Bitcoin is falling even further behind as others in the crypto industry work to tackle the climate crisis. Rather than take the initiative to curb energy usage by changing the code, most major players in the Bitcoin space refuse to acknowledge the problem at all. While other crypto technologies are making changes to become more efficient and, and coming up with approaches to address historic climate pollution, Bitcoin “mining” has become dirtier in recent years with coal as its top source of electricity.

“We hope people and companies involved with Bitcoin see this as a wake up call to both change to an energy efficient protocol and actively shift our world away from fossil fuels.”
