The timber industry in Liberia is a lucrative one – at least for a country whose estimated Gross Domestic Product is only around $450 million (U.S.). The forestry sector raised well over $100 million (U.S.) in 2001, and it has long been one of the prime sources of government revenue. Following a UN ban on all diamond exports from Liberia in March 2001, it has become an industry which provides the main source of export earnings for the Liberian government.
